Earthen Textures With Masking Technique

If you visited my post earlier this week, you know that I let everyone know how grateful I am for all the positive vibes and beautiful handmade cards that I received after my injury and surgery early July! I am so happy to be able to blog again and to be able to share some of my projects from the Earthen Textures bundle (which luckily, I had a chance to play with before my fall)!

The spotlight for this project goes to the masking technique I used to obtain a more dimensional look from our standard stamped images. These vases, because they vary in shape and design were perfect for masking.

I did use the Earthen Textures 12″ x 12″ DSP for both the base layers. It actually looks like I used Misty Moonlight card stock, but if you look closely, you can see the depth of the color striations throughout. I also the tiny strip of coordinating DSP for the side portion of the card front for a background layer to the Natural Wavy Trim strip.

The thing to remember when masking is to mask the image you want to stand in front of the other(s)… (to pop out). You can use the Stampin’ Up! masking paper (#155480/Annual Catalog). These are 5″ x 7″ adhesive sheets, but if I don’t have any of those on hand, you can always use a post-it note.

The two ink colors that I used were Misty Moonlight and Pecan Pie… love this combination! For the large vase, I used Pecan Pie and for the two smaller vases, I used full strength on the smaller (center) vase and I stamped ‘off’ with the Misty Moonlight for the other one.

TIP: Another way to use your masking paper! I made the third ‘stamped off’ vase just a bit smaller than the Pecan Pie vase (using the same stamp). But for this one, I placed the masking paper on the focal image layer before stamping so I could judge how much lower I wanted this image to appear… then I just stamped on both the layer and masking paper.

The Natural Wavy Trim is a little bulky to make a bow, but I love just using it as an accent strip! This adds so much to the focal image.

Basic White (Thick) CS: 11″ x 4 1/4″ and scored at 5 1/2″
DSP: 5 1/4″ x 2″
DSP: 5 1/4″ x 1″
DSP: 4 3/8″ x 3 1/8″
Basic White CS: 4 1/4″ x 3″
