This was a really quick and simple technique using my Stampin’ Blends and some Isopropyl Alcohol for a beautiful watercolor background layer.
It is important that the alcohol contains at least 90% alcohol in order for the technique to work. I started with a 70% container and it just wasn’t strong enough to break down and move the ink from the Stampin’ Blends.
After gathering what I needed for the project (alcohol, water, Vellum, Blends, paper towel, paint brush and straw), I simply made blotches on the Vellum with the two different colors Blends in any pattern or random order you prefer.
Next, I dipped my paintbrush in a small container of alcohol and blotted the outer edges of each of the color marks with the brush. I did all the Night of Navy at one time, cleaned off my brush with the water and paper towel and then dipped it back in the alcohol and started blotting the Daffodil Delight blotches.
You can blow into the straw to move the ink around if you prefer. For this project, I just let it flow! It will get pretty wet but will just need a few minutes to dry completely.
I matted the layer on a piece of Basic White and adhered it using the Stampin’ Seal adhesive around the edges of the layer. Then, I just adhered it to the Night of Navy Card Base.
I used the Quiet Meadow Bundle for both the beautiful die cuts and also the sentiment and sentiment tag. This bundle is new from the 2021-22 Annual Catalog and is available now. Take a peek at the amount of dies that come with this set. They are amazing as stand alone focal images or layer them up to show them off like I did here!
Here’s another project I did using this technique. But this time, I did use a straw to blow the ink to make it look more like a flower!
This was a really fun and easy technique and I hope you will try it.

Not know why but your voice disappeared in the tutorial Quiet Meadow just after you finished using the alcohol on the blue blenders. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
Thanks, Yvonne! I am having trouble with the upload to YouTube. I tried it a few times and still no luck! You can visit my FB page (facebook.com/lollypoppaper). The video is fine there!
Lori, I love this card, I have watched it several times as well as tried to color the vellum like you did. I have trouble getting the colors to move like you do. What side of the vellum do you apply the color ? I don’t know if my alcohol is too old or if I’m using the wrong side of the vellum. I am a SU demonstrator.
Hi Sue, I would check the alcohol content on the container. It needs to be 90% or higher alcohol content for it to move the ink. I first tried it with 70% and it wouldn’t move it at all. Good luck!
